Wow, is it nearly the end of Term 2 already? This term has certainly sped by, and we’ve been kept busy, so much so that this space has been a little neglected.
But as we approach the school holidays, here’s a little something we’re looking forward to: the Act3i Festival for Children!
I am big on exposing my kids to theatre and music because I believe that these have the power to broaden their perspectives and understanding of the world. This same thinking is in fact what underlies the Act3i Festival for Children, a festival dedicated to kids from ages 2 to 12, created with the aim of giving young audiences unique and memorable experiences beyond broad-based children’s entertainment and to enrich their lives through arts and culture. To this end, the lineup for the festival has been carefully curated to acts which are exploratory in nature and which challenge preconceptions.
The theatre performances for the festival will include original works from Singapore, as well as internationally from Argentina, Canada, UK, Sweden and Italy. In addition to this, there are Conviviality sharing sessions led by artists and also Sweet — a sensory and experiential workshop for kids between 4 to 8 years featuring storytelling, visual arts and even a session on making gelato! Do visit the webisite for the festival at www.act3international.com/act3ifestival for more information.
GIVEAWAY!
One of the acts that particularly caught my attention was All On A Summer’s Day, a companion piece to Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. A Midsummer Night’s Dream was one of the texts I studied in school and enjoyed, so I am keen to see what tale the creative team behind this project has spun to take the story in a new direction!
From the official description:
“Shakespeare wrote a vast body of work, and like an ocean, it can be approached from the shallows, allowing young children to explore, have fun and move forwards until they are ready to become truly immersed in the wisdom, beauty and drama of his writing. Even the youngest children can have their lives transformed by seeing a Shakespeare play.” – Vicky Ireland
Sharing this vision with Vicky, who directs our talented Singaporean cast, we will present a related tale to the famous romantic comedy and give our young audiences a highly palatable taste of Beginning Shakespeare. Our story is about the Little Indian Prince, now all grown up, and what happens to him when he meets the Shoemaker’s daughter, Phoebe. Find out how they are intertwined with the world of Fairies and Elves, with Carrot and Compost, who are on a mission for the Fairy Queen, Titania, and with Oberon’s fairies, led by Puck, hot on their heels to thwart the mission. Who saves the day in the end?
