When DD and I first got together years ago, I didn't realise how well he would take to being a Dad.When we did talk about kids, he always told me: "I only want one, a girl." Not naturally baby people, neither of us were very comfortable with kids and DD confessed to being lost as to what to do with them. All that changed after we had one, then now two kids. (DD has revised the number of kids that he would like to have significantly upwards, by the way. So much for his only one girl ... read more
Singapore Innovative Children’s Festival 2013
It's good to be a child - and parent - in Singapore these days. The June holidays are upon us and there are so many child-focused programmes that have been trotted out, it just blows me away. Think museums, shopping mall shows and meet-and-greets, arts and sport classes, theatre programmes and the like. We really are spoilt for choice. We have as good as missed the first two weeks of the June holidays as a result of being away in the UK and recovering from our trip, but there's something ... read more
Turning 35
Just like that, I turned 35.For only the second time in my life, I celebrated my birthday in the correct time zone while in London. (It was on May 31, if you're wondering.) It was kind of cool, knowing as the clock ticked past 7.20am in the morning that, YES, I had officially come to the end of my 35th year. Can I also say that it was really nice having people wishing me happy birthday over an extended window from Singapore, even before it was actually time in London? Thanks so much, everyone! To ... read more
WowArt Exploratory Trial + Workshop Pass Giveaway
Noey's always loved to draw. It's not something I understand or relate to because, well, I really suck at art. Doodling is just not something you'll find me doing too often. Not so my little man. You can catch him doodling all the time! It was great when we were on holiday as we only have to give him some paper and he would occupy himself drawing in the morning, leaving us to catch some extra shuteye. I've been thinking of re-starting him on art classes again as a result -- to nurture this ... read more
Home Again
We just got back from a long 2-week holiday in London with the whole family. If you have kids, you know that being with them for two whole weeks 24/7 away from home without the usual amenities is no break at all, but it was a lot of fun. It was a holiday that's been on the cards for a while. Until our recent trip, DD and I had not had the chance to visit the UK since we were both there for a year at the turn of the millennium. Incidentally, that was the time when we both discovered that there was ... read more
Nature at Our Doorstep
A few weeks ago, someone new moved in our on floor. But this new family is a little different from the rest.We spotted the little guys repeated appearing in our lift lobby carrying bits of twig, dried grass and hair and realised: a pair of olive-backed sunbirds have decided to make their home in our neighbour's potted plant. The kids were fascinated by this piece of nature being brought, quite literally, to our doorstep. Every day we watched as the nest slowly took shape. In the beginning, it ... read more
Reads :: Busytown Books by Richard Scarry
Richard Scarry is one of those writer-illustrators who just doesn't go out of style.I remember reading his books when I was a child, and also recall them being among my sister's favourites. I forgot about Richard Scarry and Huckle Cat and Busytown when I eventually outgrew these books. And then I had kids. When Noey was younger, one of the most important qualities which we looked for in books was that they had to be engaging enough to keep him seated so that he would eat his food. That boy was a ... read more
Chicken Rice Memories at Pow Sing
I think everyone has their favourite chicken rice stall, and often, it is the one that they grew up eating. It certainly is the case for me.My favourite? Pow Sing at Serangoon Gardens.I'm not referring to big, air-conditioned Pow Sing Restaurant along Serangoon Gardens Way though. If you had grown up in the 80s and early 90s in Serangoon Gardens, you would know that there were 2 "Pow Sings". (They both had the same Chinese name: 報喜.) One is of course the restaurant I referred to. This used ... read more
Fun at the Volkswagen Family Weekend
We were invited by the folks from Rise & Shine to the Volkswagen Family Weekend at the Volkswagen showroom last Saturday. My kids were out the door as soon as they heard that there were going to be tricycle rides, art projects and ice cream! And they were not disappointed. As we entered the showroom, they immediately honed in on the tricycles and before I knew it, Noey was off, whizzing his way around the roadways that had been laid out on the ground. I loved the cute "STOP" and "SLOW" ... read more
Sibling Playtime
They can be the best of friends, they can be the worst of friends.I think that describes the relationship between my two kiddos. Now that they're old enough to play with each other, boy, do they squabble. Noey will have to have what Naomi is holding, and Naomi will snatch what Noey's using. Noey will insist that things be done just so but Naomi will (deliberately or otherwise) foil him. You know, the usual. But once in a while they'll find something to play with together, and then magic ... read more
