While I have little trouble choosing English books for my children, I really struggle when trying to choose appropriate Chinese books. With English books, there are plenty of sources when you are in need of recommendations. There are the lists of the winners of the Caldecott Medal and Newbery Medal. There are booklists from literature-based homeschooling curricula like Five in a Row. There is also that treasure trove that is the customers' reviews section of Amazon where you can find a review on ... read more
Being Chinese, Knowing Chinese, Loving Chinese
Like most English-speaking parents, I worry about how the kids will be cope with Mandarin. When Noey was born, we were advised by friends that in order to expose him to the Chinese language as much as possible, one parent should speak to him exclusively in English, while the other speaks to him exclusively in Mandarin. This was very sound advice of course, except for the fact that neither of us felt comfortable enough to speak Mandarin exclusively. Certainly not me. If you had heard me when I ... read more
Steps and Mis-steps in Social Interaction
I think when you see your child in need, your first instinct would be to reach out, to protect, to support, and to do everything in your power to HELP. But sometimes, you just can't do that. And your heart breaks a little.Early this week, I watched as my little boy watched others play on the sidelines. He moped as his chosen playmates decided to ignore him to play with someone else. I asked him if he wanted to join in, but he shook his head. Instead, he curled up next to me to play on his own. I ... read more
Swim, Noey, Swim!
Noey started swim lessons last week. His cousins were looking to start a class and I jumped at the chance to let him learn in a group setting. While DD is a very proficient swimmer, and would have done a decent job as a swim instructor, we did think Noey would be more willing to learn in a group with friends rather than on his own. As it was, when I first broached the subject of swim lessons with him, he quickly said he didn't want them. But when I told him that S and Z would be with him, he ... read more
Elly: Latest Collection + Shorts (with Discount Code!)
Today I'm going to introduce you to a little store, which, if you're a regular follower of this blog, will not be new to you at all.I'm talking about the Elly Store of course! Tucked away in Cluny Court, this is a little gem of a store which is so pretty, you can't help but walk in when you see it. And if you see a familiar face up on the wall, yes, that's Noey on the big canvas, and in a couple of other little pictures near the cash register. Inside, you'll find a treasure trove of gorgeous ... read more
Italy: The Amalfi Coast
It's been a while since we've been on a really good holiday. Such is life when you have two little kids in tow. So what do I do? I reminisce. Today, I'm going to be blogging about one of my favourite countries to visit, Italy. I truly love this country for its rich history, art, colourful sites and people, and of course, the amazing food. It is the "land of the ideal cuisine" for me, as DD calls it, and he's right because I can really eat Italian food all day and not get tired of it! It is ... read more
Making Sweet & Salty Popcorn
How do you love your popcorn? I love mine salty with with a touch of sweetness, whereas DD only likes the sweet version. It is always a point of contention between us when we go to the movies. Or was anyway, since we hardly go at all these days! The kids have tried popcorn a couple of times at fun fairs, and unsurprisingly, they love it. It's usually way too sweet for my liking though, and you'll find me trying valiantly to pick out the less sweet pieces for the children, without too much ... read more
Art at Abrakadoodle
This is a post I'd been meaning to write, but somehow never got round to doing so. It's only because I was recently asked about Noey's art classes at Abrakadoodle that I decided to sit down and finish this.Noey's creative outlet is art. He loves doodling on random pieces of paper and messing about with paints. I unfortunately really suck at art, and truth be told, I don't really enjoy it. So I thought it might be fun to sign Noey up for some art classes for him to pick up some skills. Also, it ... read more
Chicken Rice Memories at Hainanese Delicacy
I've been on a nostalgia roll recently. This was triggered off by two things: National Day, which for me evokes memories of National Days past, especially now when I see my son enthusiastically singing the same national songs that I learnt as a child; and the blog posts from the Lovin' My Spot in SG blog train, inspired me to think about the places I loved in my youth. So you can imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon one of my old haunts when I was at Far East Plaza recently.I am talking ... read more
Soapy Saturday
As all parents of school-going children would know, Teachers' Day is just round the corner. I decided to go handmade this year, and was all set to bake some cookies with Noey when I came across a soap making workshop for kids that was being organised by Sharon of Oak Tree Baby. I thought it might be interesting, and since it met my handmade criteria, I decided, on a whim, to sign him up for it.The workshop was held at Soap Ministry, located in the basement in Orchard Central. We found it without ... read more
