I popped down to my old primary school this morning and was puzzled by the many cars I encountered in the driveway. Until I approached front lobby and realised that today was D-Day for 2013 Primary 1 registration -- balloting day for Phase 2C. A quick look at the board and I realised that there were 50 applicants vying for 29 places. Balloting was to be carried out for all Singaporean children living within 1km of the school. As I went into the school office clutching my precious old Report Book, ... read more
Naomi at 17 Months
My dear Meips, my spunky little girl,You are 17 months old today. Though sometimes I feel like you are 17-months-going-on-17-years.Today, as I write this, I am struck by just how different you and your brother are. He is straight as an arrow, and you, probably not so much. He accepts instructions, perhaps after testing me a couple of times. You refuse to accept instructions if it is not what you want to do and you'll keep testing me, not taking no for an answer. When he gets in trouble, your ... read more
Photoshoot! Our Family, June 2012
I think every family has a family photographer. In our family, it is DD. He is the one responsible for the gorgeous shots of the kids. The unfortunate result of that, however, is that he doesn't appear in many photographs with the children. He has tried to hand the camera over to me occasionally, but the SLR and me, we don't really get along. I have that special gift of taking over a camera, already pre-metered and focal point adjusted, and the shot will still come out blurry. It's almost an ... read more
Kid-Friendly Eateries: Osia
Kids and fine dining. You wouldn't think that they would go together, but at Osia, they manage to make it work. I've written about Osia a couple of times -- see here for our first visit, and here in my birthday round-up - and that is because I really like the place. The food is wonderful, and the service is attentive and professional. It's not the kind of place you would usually expect to bring children, but yes, it is kid friendly too! The fact that they welcome children is apparent from ... read more
Kid-Friendly Eateries: Prive Cafe
Whenever we don't have any idea where to go for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, my husband would suggest going to Prive Bakery Cafe. There are many reasons to love this place, but mainly, we love the fact that its location right by the water at Marina at Keppel Bay means that there is plenty for the kids to see and space for them to run around. Which is as good a reason as any to head there with the kids! When he's not staring at the boats or trying to get through the automated gates to get ... read more
Butterflies at Hort Park
If you are not sure what to do this coming Saturday morning, here's a suggestion for you: visit Hort Park and pay a visit to the Butterfly Garden within. The butterfly enclosure is only open on the last Saturday of the month, from 9am to 12pm, so it'll be opening again this weekend.Cethosia cynae (Leopard lacewing)That's what we did a few weeks ago during the last opening at the end of June.A word of warning though -- Hort Park can be pretty hot! I think there's too much concrete and landscaping ... read more
Siem Reap 2012: Raffles Grand Hotel D’Angkor
We enjoyed a slice of luxury on this holiday as a result of booking ourselves into Raffles Grand Hotel D'Angkor in Siem Reap.I had very much wanted to stay in this hotel in Siem Reap because it was one of the few places where a Raffles hotel would be within my reach, budget-wise! I had justified it as being for Noey because I would have needed a nice(er) room and big pool if I was to bring him. We left him behind in the end, but I didn't see why I should have to give up my nice room. Heh. Then ... read more
Siem Reap 2012: Our Angkor Adventure
On Thursday, the husband and I slipped off on a short four day trip to Siem Reap.I would never have thought that we would go to Cambodia for our first couple holiday, but that's the way it panned out. The plan to visit Siem Reap originated from my SIL - she was journeying up to do some research and invited the rest of the family to join her. (My SIL is doing post-grad studies in Art History. How cool is that, right?) I decided to seize the opportunity to take a holiday - any holiday - and bring ... read more
Time to Disconnect
If you've been reading this blog for a while, you'll know that I've been making some attempts to disconnect. To get off my iPhone and get some real-life interaction instead. Today, I'm blogging at the bottomsup blog on my attempts to get over my iPhone addiction, and sharing some tips on things I have found useful while on this journey. It hasn't been easy and I've slipped up many many times. This is still a work in progress for me - more of that over here!Interestingly, by the time you read ... read more
Children’s Season 2012: Island Adventures at the NMS
Guess what? Children's Season isn't quite over yet!Island Adventures at the National Museum of Singapore is still running, and a couple of Fridays ago, I made a date with some Mums from church and their kiddos to check it out. I had heard good reviews from other friends and thought that it might be a good place for the littler ones to visit. The programme is pitched as a child-friendly "entry point into understanding Singapore's history and heritage". To achieve this, there were activities ... read more
