The school holidays got off to a great start for Mei and I with Disney On Ice on over the weekend!
I must confess that I’ve been looking forward to this almost as much as my daughter. And we were not the only ones! On our way to the stadium, we saw plenty of excited little girls kitted out their princess outfits making their way to the show. It was not surprising, considering that this edition, Disney On Ice Magical Ice Festival features some of the most popular Disney Princesses around!
It’s been two years since we last attended Disney On Ice and I could see that now, as a 5-year old, the little miss is at the right age to really enjoy the show as she sat in rapt attention once the show started. She waved excitedly when Mickey and her beloved Minnie made an appearance. But the real superstars (which was what Mickey and Minnie called them!) were the Princesses, who came gliding gracefully forth.
We were first treated to the story of Ariel in The Little Mermaid. The Little Mermaid remains (and forever will be) my favourite Disney Princess story, and here we were wowed by the re-enactment of the classic tale. We did giggle when Flounder came skating out — on legs! But truly it was one of the more visually spectacular of the acts that night. We held our breath as Ariel soared high performing aerial acrobatics above the ice and broke into applause as she danced over the ice with Prince Eric. For me it was a moment of re-living my childhood, made extra special with my daughter sitting beside me.
After Ariel, we were whisked into the kingdom of Corona as we met Rapunzel and the characters from Tangled. The exchanges between Rapunzel and Flynn Rider brought plenty of laughs but I think Maximus the horse was my favourite! I was really impressed by the twin skaters skating in tandem as the front and rear of Maximus, perfectly in sync. My favourite bit however, and Mei’s too, came at the end, with the lanterns lifting up above the ice. That was truly magical!
After the intermission came another old favourite as Belle took to the stage in a segment on Beauty and the Beast. I thought this segment was one of the more exciting ones, and the sets and costumes were the most elaborate. Belle has always been one of my favourites, a role model of an intelligent, kind-hearted woman and watching this story unfold on the ice to strains of familiar tunes like “Be Our Guest” and “Beauty and the Beast” brought a smile to my face.
However, it was the last segment that everyone was waiting for. When the audience realised that we were moving on to Arendelle, a palpable buzz could be felt. And when Kristoff and Sven stepped on the ice the audience broke into applause. It was time for Frozen!
I felt Mei sit up straighter, craning her neck to spot her beloved characters. Anna came on the scene first, and when she started singing “For The First Time In Forever”, Mei totally surprised me by belting out the tune with her. At that moment, I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I started tearing. Because it hit me then that Frozen is to my daughter what The Little Mermaid was to me. The show which I loved and whose songs I listened to on repeat, which would always be special to me. The Little Mermaid was my time and Frozen is hers.
There were plenty surprises in this segment, but one of the most magical moments was when it actually started snowing! And who could forget the climax, with Elsa building her ice place to showers of fireworks while singing the iconic “Let It Go”. (Yes, my daughter joined in the chorus for that as well!) Her ice-skating too was simply breathtaking.
I think it’s obvious that we loved the show! Definitely one of the better ones we’ve been to. Disney On Ice Magical Ice Festival will run till the end of the March school holidays so do grab your tickets for a magical afternoon the children will not forget!

Hello troll, thanks for your concern over my personal tax matters. I’ve actually always made it a point to declare on this blog anything I’ve received, and am well aware of my own tax obligations. Perhaps you should note that impersonating a civil servant is a seizable offence under the Criminal Procedure Code so you might like to think twice before you go around calling yourself “taxman” and using an e-mail address modelled on IRAS and spamming everyone with your unwanted advice.
