As the dust settles on the new year, there is no rest for the weary in this household as we start gearing up for the next big event on the calendar: Chinese New Year.
As kang tang as I am, there are a few things I do adhere to when preparing for Chinese New Year: I try to do a bit of spring cleaning (though the standard varies from year to year!), I buy new year goodies for our home and for our parents, I prepare ang pows, and I buy new clothes. Buying new clothes for the new year is something my mother did every year and which I’ve continued doing since I started earning my own money. Admittedly, I love new clothes so any excuse to get some new ones, right? But I like this practice of starting the new year in new clothes — a fresh start, a clean slate. With children, this has extended to getting new outfits for them too.
While I often have to hope to chance on something nice or try my luck at getting a coveted cheongsam from some popular online retailers, with the kids, it’s simple: I head to Elly. Since they launched their first cheongsam pieces three years ago, I’ve been togging the kids in their outfits. Especially when they started having matchy-matchy sets for the both of them! (See Noey and Mei in Elly in 2013 and 2014!) It was just too cute and yet stylish at the same time.
This year, I got to take a sneak peek at the collection when both Noey and Mei were roped in to model for Elly’s 2015 CNY Collection: Home. Lucky me, cos this has got to be my favourite collection, and in my opinion, their best one to date.
Presenting Elly’s CNY Collection: Home
One of the special features of each Elly CNY collection is a selection pieces made from fabrics which Elly designs and prints on their own that are one-of-a-kind Elly. And this year, they went for a mix of the classic and the fun. Their exclusive fabrics for 2015 consist of the simple yet striking geometric Japanese Fans design in three colours, the playful Swallows design, featuring red swallows against turquoise clouds, and the totally whimsical and utterly Singaporean Home design, with local icons dear to our hearts. Think dragon playground, pelican playground, SBS buses, HDB flats! Perfect for SG50 this year, don’t you think?
In usual Elly fashion, there are mandarin-collared shirts for boys, and cheongsams for girls, in a variety of prints that you can mix and match. There are onesies for baby girls and little mandarin-collared shirts in 3-month, 6-month and 9-month sizing too so that even the littlest ones can get in on the action this Chinese New Year.
Noey and Mei in matching Red Japanese Fans and Blue Japanese Fans prints.
Lil S in a Home Cheongsam and Mei in a Swallows Emily dress.
Noey and lil A looking impossibly cute together in the Lanterns print.
I was starting to feel a bit envious of my kids so I was really thrilled to find out the this year, Elly is letting mummies get in the act by offering a series of clutches in their exclusive designs! Yay! I admit it — my top priority was picking out my own clutch before moving on to pick out the kids’ clothes! There are also cute little bags in two sizes in matching cheongsam prints that I know Mei is going to love.
Clutches for Mums in Elly’s signature fabrics for 2015.
Little bags for little girls! Available in the same five fabrics as the clutches above.
This is just a small sampling of the collection — do hop over to Elly’s Facebook Page to see more photos and designs: Home — CNY 2015. The collection has also just gone on sale at their store in Cluny Court over the weekend so you can also hop down to to take a look and make your purchases. But you’d better be quick, because the last I heard, the items are really flying off the shelf and some items and sizes are already out of stock. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya!
GIVEAWAY!
I am also really excited to bring you an exclusive giveaway with Elly where one lucky reader stands to win the Emily Dress in the Swallows Print (worth $59) from Elly’s latest collection! This dress comes in sizes from 1Y to 6Y and the Emily dress is my personal favourite design of the Elly range. I think that pop of red is perfect for Chinese New Year and yet versatile enough to be worn any time of the year. In short, it’d make a great addition to your little girl’s wardrobe!

Bak kwa
Ok very realistic answer.
I could be saying connecting relationships with distant relatives where we left off from the previous CNY, but it would be so..,fake.
I would really like to hang out with some but not all.
But i remember spending these moments with the closer ones when I was younger, everyone was chomping on bak kwa only!
And playing ban luck for the next 6to8hours.
Those were the good old days!

Your comment made me laugh, Jazry! Thanks for being honest.

I love the CNY lightup in Chinatown and make it a tradition to visit China Town every year.Though not a Chinese, I love CNY very much and my daughter gets angpows every year from my Chinese neighbor and they pass vegetarian snacks (so considerate of them as we are strict vegetarians)too for us and my husband receives oranges from his colleagues too every year. These things make me realise that I am truly blessed to be living in Singapore so rich in different cultures and yet everyone treats others with sense of friendship.
Mummybean says
Thanks for sharing, Arsheitha! That’s a wonderful testimony to the truly multicultural society that we live in.
