Noey’s new haircut deserves a post, not just because it was long overdue, but because this is the first successful haircut we’ve had with him in a long while. There was no screaming, minimal crying and it took only about an hour from start to finish. A far cry from the ordeal it usually is. It is a bonus that it looks good too. And the icing on the cake — it was FREE!
Yup, his hair stylist was none other than his own Papa.
We used to bring Noey to Junior League at Suntec City. There is a guy there we particularly like, because he is quick and Noey’s haircut generally comes out looking nice. After a while though, we decided that there was no point paying $20 to cut Noey’s hair there when he didn’t care for the bells and whistles, and we would have to deal with the embarrassment of holding down a boy wriggling and screaming at the top of his voice. At around the same time, we learnt that my parents had an electric shaver with attachments specifically for cutting hair. With nothing to lose, we decided to borrow it and try our hand at cutting his hair ourselves.
The first couple of times went badly. He was crying, screaming, and twisting all over the place for hours. It was a huge combined effort just to get Noey through it. (And you wondered why we left his hair get so overgrown.)
This time however, he was finally old enough to understand instructions, be absorbed in the iPad, and most critically, understand incentives.
“Good job Noey,” DD would say periodically. “You’re doing well! Now you’re one step closer to…”
“THE LEX LUTHER POWER ARMOUR SET!!!”, he would yell. (That’s one of DD’s Lego sets that he promised to let Noey open if he got through his haircut smoothly.)
And it kept him going.
I am also suitably impressed by the husband’s skill with the shaver. I told him he has an alternative career as a hair stylist, though only in one style!
In the meantime, we enjoy a 3-month breather till Noey’s next haircut.

Can I send Sean to DD for a haircut too? 🙂 What brand is your shaver? May try it ourselves. With 2 boys, I could save a lot of money if I cut their hair myself!
BeanBean says
haha, ok, i'll tell him he has clients! the brand of the shaver is remington. ours is some har styling kit my parents bought from malaysia. but anything that allows you to adjust the length of the hair to be cut should be good!

Very impressive! Now if D could cut his own hair too, think of the savings!

I find myself using "incentives" with kate very often too, sigh!

p.s. Nomi looks so cute in the background with the book.
BeanBean says
Yes, if only he could do that!

Like you, I try not to use incentives too, but sometimes it really helps!

One of the rare times she looks enthusiastic with a book! Haha.
