When I started having kids, one of the things I’ve fretted about is their Chinese language proficiency. In fact, if you’ve been a follower of this blog, you’ll know that the topic of being Chinese, knowing Chinese and loving Chinese often comes up. I’ve done what I can given my own discomfort with using the language, and the pressure has intensified this year since Noey’s Chinese tutor told us at the last possible moment, after school had already started, that she would not be able to tutor him this year. So guess who has had to step up to the plate to take responsibility for his Chinese learning?
I’m still working out my game plan for the year, but one thing I know I’ll continue to do is to expose both children to Chinese in different ways. So I’m always really happy when I hear of a fun avenue through which the children can enjoy the Chinese language.
I’m talking about the theatre, and in this case, The Three Billy Goats Gruff 三只山羊, which will be staged by SRT’s The Little Company (TLC) from 18 Feb 2016!
We previously watched this same play in English and the whole family really enjoyed it. (Click here to read our review of the English play!) So I am confident that the kids are going to love The Three Billy Goats Gruff 三只山羊. The tale revolves around the titular Three Billy Goats Gruff (affectionately known as “Big”, “Middle” and “Baby”), a close-knit trio who graze happily together with their caretaker, Little Bo-Frilly. But one day, it dawns on them that they are in the middle of a horrible drought. As the grazing field starts to turn a dreadful shade of brown, they start to think that the grass is, literally, greener on the other side of the valley. The trio decide to cross the bridge to the other side of the valley for survival, but to do so, they will have to take on the frightening troll who lives under the bridge, and who has a special taste for goat… Will they succeed? Find out in this rock and trolling’ musical for kids and adults alike!
Here’s the official synopsis in Chinese, for those of you who prefer it that way:
We previously also enjoyed an earlier edition in this series, Goldilocks and the Three Bears 金发姑娘和三只熊, and I’m looking forward to more of the same this time round! Tickets are already on sale via Sistic so don’t forget to grab yours and surprise your children with the fact that Chinese can indeed be fun! This show is recommended for children aged 5 and up.

Exposing our children to mandarin has been a struggle for us with our complete lack of Chinese knowledge. Hooray that things have advanced so there are fun avenues to learn through exposure and immersion rather than more hours of drilling and tuition. Would love to bring our kids and maybe mummy and daddy will also pick up something!
