I have so much to say about our recent trip to Hong Kong Disneyland, which, in the my kids’ opinion, was one of the best holidays ever. But I have a feeling I’ll never really get round to writing about it cos there are SO MANY PICTURES. We’ll see. Instead let me first tell you about our lunch. Yes, you read that right. But not just any lunch but our special Disney Dim Sum lunch, naturally!
After fulfilling the kids’ fantasies at Disneyland over two days, I lined up something that was just for me on the last day: Lunch at Crystal Lotus at the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel. Crystal Lotus is an award-winning Chinese restaurant, but what I was really there for was for the Disney Signature Dim Sum. Yes, I know it’s gimmicky but when I saw the pictures, I couldn’t resist!
The Disney Signature Dim Sum is usually available only in the weekends and public holidays, but I realised after some clicking around that they have a Special Dim Sum Lunch Set for guests at the two Disney hotels that was available both on weekdays and in the weekends, that featured selections from the Disney Signature Dim Sum as well as some other popular dishes, as long as you made a booking with at least 48 hours notice. Perfect, I thought. My mind was made up.
Here’s where things went a bit awry.
When I called about a week ahead to make my bookings for the Character Breakfast at Enchanted Garden and this lunch at Crystal Lotus, I was told that the lunch set order had to be taken directly by the restaurant and that someone would call me back. Except that I never got a call. I only realised this the day before our flight so I thought what I’d do is reconfirm with the hotel on arrival about my lunch set. I guess there was some communication error because when I asked, I was given the impression that my lunch set order was taken, only to realise on arrival at the restaurant three days later that it wasn’t. I was told that they tried to contact me but didn’t manage to get through. Fortunately, they had reserved one order of each of the Disney Signature Dim Sum for me, so I was still able to order them ala carte. But lesson learnt — call during restaurant hours to confirm your orders if you wish to secure the set!
Anyway, having the freedom to pick from the selection of Disney Signature Dim Sum and their ala carte menu, this is what we had:
Mickey Seafood Glutinous Pancakes (HK$72)
Little Pig Barbeque Pork Buns (HK$88)
Little Green Men Pork and Vegetable Buns (HK$88)
Mike Meat Buns (HK$68)
Olaf Red Bean Buns (HK$72)
Aren’t they the cutest! Admittedly they looked better than they tasted. The husband and I liked the seafood pancake, which was crisp with a good bite, and the best buns were the Little Pigs and Olaf, though the buns were a bit thick and not fluffy baos you’d expect to get at such a fancy restaurant. But I guess folks order them primarily for their cuteness factor so no surprises there!
The better assessment of the food at Crystal Lotus was probably the other dishes we ordered. The Crispy Chicken (Half) was really delicious. Moist, juicy meat with that perfect crispy skin on the outside. All of us walloped this in a flash. My favourite dish was the Vegetables and Beancurd Skin in Fish Stock. That stock tasted of liquid goodness and was just what we needed after a couple of days of theme park food. We also had a very tasty Rice Vermicelli with Stewed Duck.
Crispy Chicken (Half, HK$218)
Vegetables with Beancurd Skin in Fish Stock (HK$218)
So I don’t think I’d be back for more of the Disney Dim Sum. Unless they come up with more designs, of course! But I’d say you definitely have to have them at least once to see them for yourself. Crystal Lotus, however, is worth a re-visit.
