Amidst the feasting and festivities that is Chinese New Year, I took some time out yesterday afternoon to bring the kids out for a KidsFest theatre treat to meet Little Red Riding Hood.
Mei loves her classic fairy tales, and Little Red Riding Hood is up there among her favourites. Which was why when I saw the show listings for KidsFest 2016, I knew we had to make a date with the famous lass in her signature red hood, even if it meant that we would be meeting (gasp!) The Big Bad Wolf!
I think the beauty of theatre is that it allows you to gain a fresh perspective on even familiar stories. We thought we knew what Little Red Riding Hood was about, but in this play, we were introduced to the back story to the tale. Scarlet is a girl who lives with her woodcutter father near a forest. On her 16th birthday, she receives a mysterious letter from her Grandfather in which he asks her to meet him by the 100-year old oak tree in the forest. He also conveys to her a magical incantation, but does it do? Also, should Scarlet really be wondering through the forest where dangerous creatures lurk?
From the get-go, we were brought on an exciting adventure with Scarlet as she meets Stanley the Squirrel, and together they set off to make the date with Grandfather at the old oak tree. We were entertained with lots of songs, action, and cute cuddly woodland creatures. Indeed Stanley the Squirrel and gang were my favourite part of the show! The children were also kept engaged with the many interactive moments when the audience was asked to join in the action. There was nothing like seeing storybook characters up close — though not too close! Walter the (big bad) Wolf did a run around the theatre and Mei positively growled at him when he came near!
Little Red Riding Hood was, altogether, a welcome treat for all of us. We had invited a good friend of Mei’s from school to join us, and little J and Mei had both been confined to home over the past week for HFMD. So you can imagine what a joy it was for them both to be out to the theatre! Thanks KidsFest for an enjoyable afternoon!
