Being a mummy means that I’m often on the lookout for good stuff for my kids, and when I get to share it with them, I’m doubly thrilled!
I was recently introduced to the soaps and balms from the Olive Oil Skin Care Company and was instantly attracted to the fact that these products are made from natural ingredients with no preservatives, additives, colourings or palm oil. The use of olive oil for dry skin has been a popular folk remedy for centuries, thanks to its moisturising and hypoallergenic properties. All these factors come together to create a skincare range that is gentle and nourishing, and suitable for babies, kids, mummies and daddies alike, especially those with sensitive skin or eczema issues.
There are a few things that make the products from the Olive Oil Skin Care Company stand out:
1. Only 100% Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil is used. Extra virgin olive oil is the top quality oil, produced from the first cold pressing of the olives and pits. The soaps from the Olive Oil Skin Care Company are marked “pure” because only 100% of this top quality extra virgin olive oil is used in their product, undiluted by other cheaper and inferior grade oils and waxes.
2. Full control over the source of its olive oil. The olive oil used in its products is sourced from an olive plantation closely linked with the company. The Olive Oil Skin Care Company is thus able to ensure the quality of its olive oil, including the fact that the oil comes from a plantation uses no herbicides, fungicides or pesticides.
Of course, the proof is in the testing, and my two little assistants and I were very happy to do just that!
Pure Olive Oil Soaps
(S$9.90 each, $10.90 for Aboriginal series)
These soaps come are the staples of the product line and come in three varieties: traditional unscented, scented with essential oils, and combined with traditional Aboriginal ingredients. All soaps come come individually boxed. Of the three, the traditional unscented type is the most gentle on skin and most rich. All the soaps glide on easily on to the skin and are low lathering, but wash off well, leaving skin feeling spotless and clean. You definitely don’t get the “cannot-wash-clean” feeling with these soaps! My kids and I loved the scented variety best. We tried the Rose Geranium soap and he smell of rose geranium lent a lovely fragrance to the soap that lingered gently on the skin after use and was not too strong. I also thought the aboriginal series was interesting — isn’t Gumby Gumby just the cutest name? Crushed leaves are added to these soaps, giving them a more interesting texture, but more importantly, also lending them additional nourishing properties.
Body Wash
(S$17.90 each)
If you are like me and prefer using shower gel, then the body wash would be more up your alley. This is very similar to the pure olive oil soaps, except in a liquid form! After all, both are made from 100% saponified Australian extra virgin oil, something that is proudly declared on the packaging. What comes out of the bottle here is a thick-ish gel that is easy to apply and rinses off well. It comes in a very handy 375ml size as well which should last you quite a while, even with your kids enthusiastically using it! The body wash comes in unscented and scented varieties.
Shampoo and Conditioner
(S$32.90 each)
I was told that their shampoo was their best seller and after using it I can see why! This shampoo is incredibly nourishing and leaves hair soft and shiny, even without the use of conditioner. It worked wonders on Mei’s hair in particular, which is thin and fine. It did take a bit of effort to wash off — once or twice I had to chase her back into the shower to make sure it was thoroughly rinsed off — but her hair certainly benefitted from it. When using this shampoo, she didn’t need conditioner and her hair did not tangle, but was soft and glossy. It didn’t work quite as well on my own thick hair though. I found it a little difficult to work through my own hair as a result of its low lather, though maybe that’s a result of a lack of skill too. On my own hair, I did need the conditioner which I really liked, being light yet moisturising at the same time. I’m definitely going to get more of the shampoo for Mei though!
Soothing Balms
(S$26.90 each)
Apart from hair and body washes, the Olive Oil Skin Care Company also produces soothing balms for all those nicks, bites, rashes that kids (or maybe just my kids) are always getting. We have been using The Original Soothing Balm for those itchy moments and it has proven to be quite effective. At least, I don’t hear a complaint out of my kids after application! It’s rich formulation is also effective on dry spots and patches, and I like that it glides on easily and is non-greasy. Made with, yes, 100% Australian extra virgin olive oil and sorbitan olivate, this balm is also known to be very effective for baby nappy rash and eczema.
