Last weekend, I had the opportunity to go a-Cookyn with Mervyn, and I brought along the family! Ok, not quite the family you’d have expected — I’m definitely not brave nor foolhardy enough to bring my super active little rascal for a cooking class. Instead, Noey was left to his own devices at home while my Mum, sister and her boyfriend accompanied me to cook up (and eat) some Spanish treats.
The menu for the afternoon was:
- Wild Spot Prawn Cerviche
- Chorizo and Fingerling Potato Bake
- Squid Ink Paella with Fresh Crab and Seafood
- Churros with Hot Chocolate
- Sangria!
My dear sis working “real hard” there on the churros batter. (Actually all the hard work had been done by another guy in the class.)
Us with our sweet reward. The great thing about this dessert was that each of us could choose to eat it the way we liked it: Mum had hers plain with a teeny bit of chocolate (since she is on a low-sugar diet), my sis had hers with the cinnamon sugar only, while Francis and I had them with the works — cinnamon sugar AND chocolate!
Yummy churros, fried a delicious golden brown by Amanda!
Shelling the prawns for our cerviche. These wild spot prawns are pink when raw.
Plated and “cooking” in the citrus juices. I didn’t realise that citrus juices could be used to cook food, though seeing this, it finally dawned on me why raw tuna turns like pink when drizzled with lemon. I thought it was a reaction but never realised it was actually cooking.
Sitting pretty in little shot glasses 15 mins after and ready to be devoured! These were sooooo good, I lost count of the number I had. (Oops.) There were only 6 of us at our table and my sis isn’t a fan of raw food, so I happily had her portion, and probably more. (Double oops.)
Francis attempting — and succeeding — at flipping the sausages and potatoes sizzling in the pan. Well done!
Potato bake ready to be popped in the oven!
Watching Merv clean the squid and demonstrate how to remove the squid ink. I think I’m going to try to get hold of the squid ink packets for this one.
Merv putting some finishing touches on the paella.
Ta-dah! I’m all hungry looking at all that crab.
A good time was had by all and I know we each came away with something: Mum was intrigued with the DIY Sangria and commented on how she might do the same for a dinner party, my sis was eyeing the churros and I can’t wait to put some paella on the dinner table. I’ll prob go for something easier than crab to start though! Maybe seafood — cod, prawns and squid. Now I just have to go get me that Tefal pan…
(We should have taken a pic together Vanessa!)
