What can you build out of Lego? I think, just about anything when you put your mind to it.
The results of this can be clearly seem at the Raffles City Level 3 atrium where the winning entries of the Lego Rebuild Your Memories competition are currently being displayed. The competition, which ended on 26 June 2015, invited Singaporeans to bring to life their favourite memories of Singapore with Lego. A fitting tribute to SG50, this Lego-loving family would agree!
At the Lego Rebuild Your Memories event, with the charming little minibuilds of Singapore icons! These coveted little pieces have sadly no longer available as they have been fully redeemed.
We popped down to Raffles City over the weekend to check out the displays and were mighty impressed! Some of the winning builds were by children, one as young as 6 years in age. I had a good time looking at all the little details that went into each build — the nostalgic touches really brought a smile to my face!

The Bukit Timah KTM station! I have memories of this place, having lived nearby once.
An SBS bus! I loved the retro bus stop next to it.
I was able to look at these displays in peace, because my kids were instead drawn to the Build and Take Home event, where they had a go at rebuilding their own Singapore memories too.
Noey immediately got down to work, building various models before showing me the piece he wanted to bring home: a fighter jet like the one in the NDP Parade. Do look out for this solo jet at the end of the mobile air column at about 7pm during the parade! We’ve watched the planes from Marina Bay on two Saturdays and it’s Noey’s favourite bit.
As for Mei, she was happy building with friends, constructing a house with Adam (albeit a rather interesting one with random door frames and a staircase that led to nowhere). She later built a tall stack and pronounced it “Papa’s office”. Couldn’t fault her on that one!
Hard at work building their “house”.
With the creations they eventually took home: a Fighter Jet for Noey and Papa’s office for Mei.
In between, Mei took some time out to contribute to the building of an 8.5 foot tall Dragon Playground structure, being created by master builder Nicholas Foo just for the exhibition. I did wonder how safe it would be to let kids near the structure but they cleverly got kids to build diamond shaped “bricks” instead for the real expert to use! Mei was pretty chuffed to get a certificate for her efforts too.

My own Lego Dragon Builder! Certified!
The real dragon builder at work.
The final piece! It’s orange on one side and blue on the other.
Head on down to Raffles City where all the displays including the completed Dragon Playground will be on display till 30 July 2015.
Do also look out Lego’s next promotion which will be coming up shortly — Lego SG50 Mega Minifigures! There are only 50 pieces available, each with its own unique serial number and a birthday message to celebrate SG50. To stand a chance to win one for yourself, spend a minimum of $100 on Lego toys in a single receipt from 5 to 31 August 2015 at participating outlets. These include all Lego certified stores in Singapore, Toys ‘R’ Us, Lego mono brand stores, department stores and select toy stores. I know my husband will definitely be looking out for these!
*Thank you Lego Singapore for the group photo and the media invite to this event!
