When I was young, I briefly considered becoming a teacher. Briefly, I say, because my mother, herself a teacher for more than 30 years, was adamant that I should not be one. In truth, I didn’t take up a career in teaching anyway because I wouldn’t have been very good at it! And it certainly wasn’t because I didn’t try. I did relief teaching before I started university and taught tuition after that. My students did love me, but I’m sure it was because of how easily they could climb over my head!
Which all the more reason why I’m ever so grateful that my children have faithful teachers whom they are fond of, and who have been effective in making sure that they learn something!
I was wondering what to make for the teachers this year. Homemade granola was mooted as an idea (and this mum really did make some!) but life has been busy for me and I decided instead to eschew the handmade and but something instead. Thanks to this great list I found just the perfect idea — A bag of yellow food items packaged as a bag of sunshine!
I really liked how this turned out! Yellow is so cheery and yellow items are not difficult to find. The kids and I picked out a mix of items which we like and also which I thought would be appreciated by teachers. Popped these into bags from SKP, tied them up with yellow ribbon which I also found at SKP, and created a card by modifying this free printable that I found online. I printed the cards as fold-overs and I got the kids to write their own messages to their teachers on the inside. Mei did this very enthusiastically, coming up with her own different messages for all her teachers and writing them all on her own. Noey was less enthusiastic, but got them done because he didn’t want to lose out to his little sister. Gotta love little girls huh!
And that was it! It was easy and fuss-free. The only qualifier I’d add is that if you’re making these for your Primary school-going child, you’d probably want to make smaller and less heavy bags. I kinda forgot that Noey would have to lug six of these bags to school and distribute them on his own this year. At kindy I attend the Teachers’ Day celebration and am usually on hand to help them with their gifts. He struggled a bit but thankfully he managed to successfully pass them to all his teachers bar one. That one came back in a mangled heap in his bag but I think 5 out of 6 ain’t bad.
I also had the opportunity to help contribute to the class gift to their teachers. Another mum coordinated this and I helped with the gift tags. If you know me, you’ll know that that is my favourite part of the whole process so I was all too happy to do them when asked! I think it looked pretty good when we put it all together!
I also made a little bunting for the cake for Mei’s class celebration. Guess I just can’t let a celebration go by without some crafting on my part! But I think this year’s Teachers’ Day had just the right amount.
To all our wonderful teachers and educators, thank you for teaching, guiding, inspiring and loving our children. Teaching is a calling not all can answer. Thank you for taking up the challenge and making a difference. Happy Teachers’ Day!
