Some time back I was invited to attend a cooking demo class at ToTT.
If you have not heard of ToTT (Tools of the Trade), you’re in for a treat. This is THE place for those who love to cook, bake or entertain. 36,000 sqft of dining and kitchenware products to suit every need! I can spend hours just browsing and creating my dream home. The latter only in my head, of course.
ToTT also conducts cooking classes in their Cooking Studio. Whether you’re a complete newbie in the kitchen or an experienced home-cook wanting to perfect your skills, and whether you prefer to watch a demo or participate hands-on, you’ll be able to find a class to meet your needs.
I was pretty excited to attend the demo class at ToTT mainly because I, err, love attending cooking classes. I’ve gone for a number with most of the established cooking schools in Singapore, but this was my first time at ToTT. And it turned out to be an enjoyable session with a comfortable informal vibe, just as I had expected. With Gryphon tea in hand, I, together with the other participants were free to observe with the chef instructor was preparing, and ask him any questions to clarify doubts. A number of participants also occasionally went forward to ask the Chef questions or take photos. If you were not so inclined, it was still easy to follow along as there were two large TV screens which were constantly adjusted to give you an immediate close-up of what the chef was doing.
My only complaint is that, with the glass walls, the setting sun, and my amateur photography skills, my photos didn’t turn out too well!
You can see the two large screens above, which made it very easy to view every move the Chef made!
Our instructor for the day was Chef Philippe Nouzillat, chef and owner of Taratata Bistro. True to his French roots, he was demonstrating 2 dishes for our class:
1. Chilean Sea Bass Grenobliose
2. Dark Chocolate Mousse
(Yes, I admit it was the chocolate mousse that caught my attention and made me choose this class!)
Both dishes were tasty and really easy to make. Just my favourite kind to recipes!
Chilean Sea Bass, served with buttered croutons.
The chef apologised for only preparing fewer portions as there was a miscommunication in the number of participants, but as you can see, the tasting portion was still fairly generous!
Dark Chocolate Mousse. Mmmmm.
I’ve successfully reproduced the chocolate mousse at home, much to the delight of my kids. I’ll be sharing the recipe on this blog later this week, so if you’re chocoholics like my kids, you might want to keep an eye out for that.
And if you’re interested to pick up a tip, trick or recipe or two, you should check out ToTT’s list of classes to kickstart you on that journey. They have a number of Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day classes that look interesting, as well as this one on Deluxe Baby Food that tickled my fancy. Maybe I might have considered that one if I had another baby to wean!
