Cirque Eloize iD: Pulsating Urban Dance Meets Eye-Popping Circus Arts

February 28, 2016 by Mummybean Leave a Comment

An exciting mish-mash of urban dance and and circus arts — that’s is Cirque Eloize iD, the latest so-hip-it-hurts show to arrive in town.

Back in Singapore by popular demand after their first successful run in 2011, Cirque Eloize (pronounced “el-waz”, with a french accent!) iD takes 15 performers and puts together a show showcasing 10 circus disciplines. The media release promised a “spectacular high-energy production blending jaw-dropping acrobatics, hip hop and street dance”. How fun! I was excited.

I brought along the circus fan of the family (ie. my husband) to the opening show and I’m pleased to say we were not disappointed. From the get-go, Cirque Eloize iD pulsated to its rock and electronica inspired soundtrack as the scene opened on the bustling streets of the big city. One by one, the acts flowed seamlessly into one another, tied together in a loose West Side Story inspired storyline, with rival street gangs seeking to express their identity and individuality.

What made the show special was no doubt the series of eye-popping, and on many occasions death-defying stunts that were pulled off. Acts such as contortion, juggling, stunt biking, the Cyr wheel and aerial silks had us holding our breath. It was hard to choose a favourite but the husband was really impressed with the hand balancing, especially the final act that had the performer balancing high — WAY up high — atop at least eight chairs. I’m not sure of the number as I got so worried for him I lost count! I enjoyed seeing the stunt biker in action, especially when they pulled up a member of the audience and had the biker jump over him from many directions! We were sitting way up front near the stage so we could see almost every centimetre and it all looked REALLY close!

Both of us also agreed that the trampowall finale was simply one of the best acts of the night. One of the Cirque Eloize’s signatures, it was simply amazing watching the performers seemingly fly and walk up and down the wall with ease. It’s something that has to be seen to be believed!
