Welcoming the Mid-Autumn Festival with Swensen’s SG50 Moon Gems

September 13, 2015 by Mummybean Leave a Comment

Brace yourselves folks, because mooncake season is upon us!

As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, all the shops have started putting out those tasty morsels which are just so hard to resist! Shops have gotten more creative with their mooncakes too over the years, and now there truly is something for every tastebud. The husband favours the traditional baked mooncakes — lotus paste, single yolk, no nuts. I like the snowskin mooncakes and the champagne truffle ones get me every year! My kids sadly are not that fond of mooncakes. At least they weren’t… until they spied the ice-cream mooncakes that I brought back from Swensen’s!

MoonGems1Swensen’s SG50 Moon Gems — (from L to R) Strawberry Fields Forever, Durian Royale, Sticky Chewy Chocolate, Lychee Dreams

Swensen’s SG50 Moon Gems are delectable ice-cream mooncakes, each proudly bearing the iconic emblem of the merlion in celebration of this Jubilee year. The mooncakes come in six irresistible ice-cream flavours, each encased in snowskin made from Swensen’s own recipe. Choose four from the following flavours to create a box to take home!

  • Strawberry Fields Forever
  • Durian Royale
  • Sticky Chewy Chocolate
  • Lychee Dreams
  • Crunchy Milo
  • Yummy Yam

I sure had a hard time choosing! I definitely wanted the Durian Royale and Lychee Dreams, and in the end, picked Sticky Chewy Chocolate and Strawberry Fields Forever to round off the box. Everyone at home was SO PLEASED when I came home bearing goodies!

MoonGems2So excited to have the SG50 Moon Gems for tea, she asked to hold them!

The proof was in the tasting, and our favourite flavour was easily the Durian Royale. With a delicious real durian taste, this was one mooncake that had the husband, me and Mei fighting for more. Noey the non-durian lover was happy to leave us to it, preferring Lychee Dreams instead. I really liked this flavour too, which had a strong lychee flavour, with bits of fruit within, but was not overly sweet. Sticky Chewy Chocolate and Strawberry Fields Forever are Swensen’s classic flavours and these familiar flavours didn’t disappoint. It didn’t take long before there was none left. It was just as well since the ice-cream starts melting pretty quickly in our hot weather so eat them fast!

I should add that Swensen’s SG50 Moon Gems Collection comes in a really cool box with working LED lights that could double up as a lantern for the Mid-Autumn Festival! I’m waiting to use it as a decorative feature for the festival — if I manage to fend off the kids’ grubby little hands! All the more reason to grab these Moon Gems before they run out!

MoonGems3I think my chances of getting this beautiful box to myself is very slim…

Swensen’s SG50 Moon Gems Collection is priced at $35.80 for a box of 4. Swensen’s Cool Rewards and Kids’ Club members can enjoy a 20% early bird special discount, while selected credit cardholders will receive a 15% early bird special discount, both for purchases made before 15 September. Thereafter a 15% and 10% discount applies respectively for all purchases till 27 September. Do check out further details for this promotion on the Swensen’s website.

*We received a box of Swensen’s SG50 Moon Gems for the purpose of this review. All opinions remain, as always, my own.
