When it comes to productions, it is always the ones that are based on well-loved books that are favourites with my kids. Noey’s eyes positively lit up when I told him that we were going to go watch The Way Back Home live on stage. Of course, that comes with a certain measure of expectation, and more cherished a book, the more real the question: Would the show match up? Fortunately for us, we have yet to be disappointed. Our latest outing to catch The Way Back Home was no exception. We knew ... read more
Welcoming the Mid-Autumn Festival with Swensen’s SG50 Moon Gems
Brace yourselves folks, because mooncake season is upon us! As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, all the shops have started putting out those tasty morsels which are just so hard to resist! Shops have gotten more creative with their mooncakes too over the years, and now there truly is something for every tastebud. The husband favours the traditional baked mooncakes — lotus paste, single yolk, no nuts. I like the snowskin mooncakes and the champagne truffle ones get me every year! My kids ... read more
McDonald’s Happy Meals, Now With Books!
You probably know that my kids love books. Noey in particular is a voracious reader and it is something I’m rather thankful for. Even if, one of the phrases I most commonly utter is “Stop reading!!” because he is ALWAYS reading, sometimes at the most inappropriate moments! What I don’t mention so much is that my kids love McDonald’s. Yup, few things make them as happy as a Happy Meal! This is almost entirely my father’s doing, the man regularly brought me to Macs for a cheeseburger and a ... read more
GE2015: Don’t Spoil Your Vote. Choose.
(Image credit) The sound and the fury: Welcome to Election Season. My friends will know that I am keenly interested in local politics, and every election, you will find me absorbed in the news to the exclusion of almost everything else. To be honest, I wasn’t really feeling it at the start of the campaign. With the country just emerging out of an SG50 celebratory high, it felt a bit disconcerting to plunge straightaway into a divisive election, where one would take sides and bring ... read more
The Significance of A Name
When you children were born, how did you decide what to name them? Were their names long-cherished, waiting to be bestowed on that precious child? Or did you flip through many baby books and solicit ideas from friends before finally settling on that one name? Perhaps you sought the help of a geomancer for a auspicious name in order to give your child the best headstart in life. Or used a family name for that connection with your roots. Whatever the case, it is clear that when it comes to ... read more
Piano Tales: The Recital Milestone
Just over a week ago, my little girl had her first piano recital. I don’t think I anticipated that when she started her music lessons about 10 months ago she would be playing in a recital within the year! But the opportunity came up and I thought she ought to give it a shot. We were assigned a duet and I think that really helped address any hesitation she was feeling about performing as I would be right there beside her. Unfortunately that was extra stress for me! Especially since our piece, ... read more
Teachers’ Day Gifts 2015
When I was young, I briefly considered becoming a teacher. Briefly, I say, because my mother, herself a teacher for more than 30 years, was adamant that I should not be one. In truth, I didn’t take up a career in teaching anyway because I wouldn’t have been very good at it! And it certainly wasn’t because I didn’t try. I did relief teaching before I started university and taught tuition after that. My students did love me, but I’m sure it was because of how easily they could climb over my ... read more
A Date with My Son at the ArtScience Museum
Since Noey started Primary 1 this year, time with him has become a precious commodity. While I have been relieved to find that Primary 1 has not been overly stressful or hectic, the reality is that he is in school for nearly 7 hours a day. And when he gets home, there is precious little time to do much. On most days, he has either a class or CCA to attend, after which I try to squeeze in a bit of downtime, a bit of homework, a bit of piano practice and then rush him off to bed. As a result, a ... read more
Oliver Jeffer’s The Way Back Home — on Stage! {Giveaway}
Oliver Jeffers is one of our favourite authors, yet I discovered him quite by chance, when I was planning Mei’s first birthday. I make it a point to give a book as a party favour every birthday and for Mei’s birthday that year, I was looking for a book to match her “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” when I found How To Catch A Star. I loved it from the first reading, and that was how Oliver Jeffers’ books became a staple in our home library. After How To Catch A Star, Oliver Jeffers went on to ... read more
National Geographic Live with Steve Winter
Once upon a time, in the years B.C. (ie. Before Children), my husband used to be a semi-avid nature photographer. He would actually wake up early on Saturday to go and take photos of birds and flowers in our neighbourhood. Occasionally he would also wake me up to drag me to the zoo so he could practice shooting some animals. Now, if you know my husband, you’ll know that him waking up early in the morning for anything at all is a PRETTY BIG DEAL. That’s how much he enjoyed taking pictures! I ... read more
