One of the highlights of our CNY this year took place in the theatre when we had the opportunity to go catch SRT’s The Little Company’s latest mandarin production, The Three Billy Goats Gruff 三只山羊. I had enjoyed the English version tremendously and was looking forward to seeing how this show would translate into Mandarin. Would the Mandarin version still be able to convey the wit, drama and comedy of the original script? The answer is YES, though in a slightly different way. I think the ... read more
3 Fun Ikea Hacks For Kids’ Bedrooms
I was recently talking with a friend who was asking for advice on moving kids out into their own beds (and rooms!) when it struck me that it’s been just over two years since I’ve managed to end co-sleeping with the kids. After that big move, the children have settled in nicely into their room and have been sleeping there ever since. Which is not to say that they have not crept back into our bed on occasion. In fact, it happens more often than I would like! I’ve been meaning to properly ... read more
Disney On Ice Magical Ice Festival Is Coming!
Nothing puts a smile on the face of my kiddos like DISNEY! (Yes, both of them!) Which is why they are in for a real treat this school holiday because Disney on Ice will be returning to Singapore and we’ve got tickets to the show! We were lucky enough to get tickets to the previous two editions of Disney on Ice, first Princess and Heroes in 2013, then Treasure Trove in 2014, and unabashedly loved them both. This time round it’s going to be extra super special because the beloved ... read more
Cirque Eloize iD: Pulsating Urban Dance Meets Eye-Popping Circus Arts
An exciting mish-mash of urban dance and and circus arts — that’s is Cirque Eloize iD, the latest so-hip-it-hurts show to arrive in town. Back in Singapore by popular demand after their first successful run in 2011, Cirque Eloize (pronounced “el-waz”, with a french accent!) iD takes 15 performers and puts together a show showcasing 10 circus disciplines. The media release promised a "spectacular high-energy production blending jaw-dropping acrobatics, hip hop and street dance”. How fun! I was ... read more
CNY 2016: A Round Up of A Non-Event
It was kinda ironic that after all the anticipation and prep, our CNY this year was possibly the biggest non-event we’ve had in a while. We already knew that this year would be more muted as my MIL was going to be unable to host the 初一 lunch like she usually does. And then, it got worse when Mei came down with HFMD just 5 days before CNY. Yes, the dreaded hand-foot-mouth-disease. While almost a rite of passage for every preschool child in Singapore, it was just incredibly bad timing. And since ... read more
KidsFest 2016: Little Red Riding Hood
Amidst the feasting and festivities that is Chinese New Year, I took some time out yesterday afternoon to bring the kids out for a KidsFest theatre treat to meet Little Red Riding Hood. Mei loves her classic fairy tales, and Little Red Riding Hood is up there among her favourites. Which was why when I saw the show listings for KidsFest 2016, I knew we had to make a date with the famous lass in her signature red hood, even if it meant that we would be meeting (gasp!) The Big Bad Wolf! I ... read more
Getting CNY Ready
Just three days to Chinese New Year — are you ready yet? Looking at my Facebook feed, I know friends have been busy cleaning up their homes, getting clothes, and baking up a storm. It seems all the rage to bake your own CNY goodies these days and I’ve seen lots of pictures of yummy looking treats being churned out, from peanut cookies to pineapple tarts to even bak kwa! I tried my hand making pineapple tarts last year, but this year, I just never found the time nor energy. My dear mother ... read more
Chicken Milanese
As I seek to be more organised this year, one thing that I’m trying to be more regard about is menu planning. You wouldn’t think that deciding what to eat can be a real pain but it is! Especially when I have a son who only likes Western food, a daughter who loves her rice and soup and a husband who loves anything fried! There’s no pleasing everyone all the time, but this one dish comes close. This is my version of Chicken Milanese, inspired by the version we all love at California Pizza ... read more
My CNY Mini Me in Elly’s Blooms and Brollies!
If you didn’t know it, we’re telling you now: Chinese New Year is coming! I’m in the throes of my usual love-hate relationship with Chinese New Year and the accompanying stresses. There’s much to be done — decorating the house, buying goodies, preparing the food, and getting the whole family dressed. I decided earlier on to make a bit more of an effort this year since my mother-in-law is now staying with us and there is an increased chance that folks might pop by to visit. But as the days ... read more
Here come The Three Billy Goats Gruff 三只山羊! {Giveaway}
When I started having kids, one of the things I’ve fretted about is their Chinese language proficiency. In fact, if you’ve been a follower of this blog, you’ll know that the topic of being Chinese, knowing Chinese and loving Chinese often comes up. I’ve done what I can given my own discomfort with using the language, and the pressure has intensified this year since Noey’s Chinese tutor told us at the last possible moment, after school had already started, that she would not be able to tutor him ... read more
