I think when one thinks of taking road trips out from Sydney, the typical destinations that come to mind are the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley. We were thinking of Hunter Valley until DDad suggested heading out to Port Stephens. The promise of beaches and dolphins won us over! Port Stephens is about 2-2.5 hours drive from Sydney and is not a town per se, but is generally taken to refer to the region around and beyond the waterway known as Port Stephens, which is ringed by lovely bays ... read more
There Are Animals?
Sometimes the things that make an impression on a child, are not quite what you would expect. We brought Noey to the Zoo on Saturday and this is his conversation with his Ah Kong about it when he met Ah Kong on Sunday. Ah Kong: What did you do at the Zoo yesterday, Noey? Noey: Noey sat on the tram! And Noey saw the boat! The tram was higher than the boat. Ah Kong: Okay... and what else did you see? Noey: Noey saw the statues! And the waterfalls! Ah Kong: How about the animals? Did you ... read more
To School Or Not
My dear Noey,I like watching you sleep. I think that somehow, no matter how big you grow, when you're asleep, I can see you as my baby most clearly. In many ways, you still look the same asleep now as you did as a newborn and I find that very comforting when I look at you. You are having some fitful sleep tonight -- I think it is a combination of being over-tired, after having skipped your afternoon nap today, and having a little bit of a blocked nose. You've woken up crying twice already ... read more
Sydney 2010: Sydney Surrounds
While we were well into Spring when we hit the ground in Sydney, the weather wasn't as warm as we hoped. It was still cold with intermittent rain all week. Therefore when the days dawned clear and sunny, we ventured out for some fun.Our first stop on Saturday was to a Koala Park not too far (relatively speaking) from DDad's place. It was not a long drive, but on-route we discovered that Noey appears to have inherited his dad's ability to fall asleep in any moving vehicle at any time. (Ok, that ... read more
Wedding Ring, Lost but Found
-- By DDOn Thursday night I realised I lost my wedding ring - I had placed it on my study desk but when I tried to look for it, it couldn't be found. I turned the study upside down looking for it but to no avail. I suspected Noey might have had something to do with it but he was asleep. So I went to bed sad and worried where it might have been. The next morning Noey woke up and greeted me with a cheerful "papaaaa". I picked him up and asked him gently - "Noey, did you take papa's ring? Do you ... read more
Sydney 2010: Home Ground
We spent the first 3 days of our holiday staying with DD's Dad and family at their place. Our original plan was to go chiong the sights first and before meeting up with everyone some time, and on hindsight, I'm very glad we didn't do that. Being in a home environment was wonderful. It gave us a chance to recover and get over jet lag, all in the comforts of home. There was always someone to watch over Noey, and even better, we didn't have to worry about food, provisions or entertainment for ... read more
There is None Righteous, No Not One
There are times when I look at my precious child, the one who is just too cute and whose smiles and chuckles light up my life, and think: my beautiful baby, how could you be so...NAUGHTY??I had one of those moments yesterday, when during his usual JG Chinese class, Noey bit another little girl on her cheek. There were visible teeth marks on her cheek and it was red and looked a bit bruised. Ouch. At that time, Noey was packing the toy cars back into the toy basket after he was told to put the ... read more
Sydney 2010: The Trip There
When we first booked our tickets and decided on the red-eye flight to Sydney, I was not without my concerns. The thought of not being able to sleep and dealing with a cranky Noey on a 7-hour flight was not fun at all. The previous 2 times we flew with him were in the day and it did involve a bit of pain but at least we could keep him occupied and he would sleep for part of the flight. In the end however, on the recommendation of friends who assured me he would sleep, we decided to just bite the ... read more
Osia
Just before we left for Sydney, DD and I went to Osia as a little treat in celebration of our 5th wedding anniversary. (Yes, we went for modern Australian food just before leaving for Australia. We're funny like that.)I had my eye on this restaurant for a while but never got round to trying it. Our anniversary seemed as good a reason as any to ditch Noey and enjoy some good food on our own, so off we went!Despite being labelled a fine-dining establishment, the restaurant had a pleasantly casual ... read more
To Sydney and Back Again
It's tough being back at work after a long lovely holiday. We spent 10 fabulous days in Sydney over the past week and a bit, and reluctantly returned home on Saturday. Despite the fact that the weather was rather cold and it rained a few days -- where were the glorious blue Australian spring skies?? -- we had the best family holiday EVER. We chose to go to Sydney in part to visit family and Noey's Ah Kong was thrilled to bits to have his beloved grandson around for more than a week. Noey was ... read more
