I went to Ikea on my own yesterday, came out with raw material to put together these babies:Flowers to perk my my bathrooms. Fake ones of course, since I can't subject real ones to my bathrooms which have no natural lighting. That would be too cruel. The husband is amused, but small things like this? They make me happy. ... read more
This is Home, Truly
In a blink of an eye, we've officially been living in this new apartment for 1 month! It's taken a while but slowly, as the contractors stop coming by quite so often, our boxes get unpacked and our belongings get put in their place, this now feels more like home. There's still more to do. We went on an extremely tiring trip to Ikea on Saturday to pick up shelving for the storeroom, Noey's room and the study, and many storage boxes and other odds and ends. The grilles will be coming soon and I ... read more
Dance!
The little pantsless dancing dictator was at it again last night during the YOG Closing ceremony, barking out commands to all and sundry."Mummy! Stand up and dance! Stand up and dance with Noey!""Papa! Take photo of Noey with the camera!""One... two... three... (Exhales while giving his trademark grimace-smile)" (Yes, Noey's so attuned to his Papa's snapping ways that he automatically executes this routine when he sees the camera. And is feeling cooperative, of course.)"Noey DANCING!!!" I was ... read more
Faster, Higher, Stronger
When I posted my musings about the Youth Olympic Games last week, mentioning the apparent unavailability of tickets to events in venues which looked half-empty on TV, I didn't expect to wake up to news that the tickets for previously sold out events were going to be re-sold if there was spare capacity. The mystery of the missing spectators has not been solved -- the Ministry of Education even came up with a "hey, it's not us" statement in the papers -- but it was good news for folks like us who ... read more
华语 Cool?
Noey has been really into mixing it up with his English and Chinese. Of course he speaks English almost all the time, but occasionally he will say something in Chinese, and since his accent is all funny, it will completely confuse me. So much so that I've taken to asking him if he's speaking English or Chinese when I have no idea what he's saying.Recently his favourite thing to do has been to mix some Chinese into his sentences, sometimes not too accurately. Some of his classics include: "Want ... read more
To Friendship, Excellence and Respect
The big event in town these days is the Youth Olympic Games. While the local media is -- not unexpectedly -- filled with pages and pages of glowing reports of how well things are going, the overall sense I've been getting from the ground, especially online, has been overwhelmingly negative. On the whole, people are just not interested. Instead they have been complaining. About the budget that more than tripled, about the inconveniences caused by road closures, about having to give way to YOG ... read more
Man on the Moon
Have I mentioned that Noey really loves the moon? You can always hear him going on about the "big wound moon" or the "cwescent moon", depending on which he sees, and whichever catches his fancy at that particular time. (Yes, he can't really get the "r" sound right in a manner that is really impossibly cute.)Every so often, he will tell me in his serious way that "月亮 is moon and 星星 is star and 太阳 is sun", or pronounce some permutation of the 3. He always looks as if he is trying to enlighten me ... read more
Shorn Sheep
BeforeAfterHe doesn't seem too pleased about the whole affair of being shorn of most of his crowning glory does he?But we are. The overgrown mop had reached the limit of Mummy's skill level and desperately needed some professional help. This time, after realising what a terror he can be during haircuts, DD agreed with me that we should try to get it as short as possible without being an actual buzz cut.The experience of this haircut wasn't TOO bad. We took advantage of the fact that Noey had ... read more
Yoohoo…
It's been a while again, hasn't it?There has been a lot on my plate recently, what with our move into our as-yet-to-be-completely finished home and work and tiredness and let's not forget the errands that have to be run... I also seem to have developed a touch of insomnia over the past few weeks. Before our move, I was falling asleep with Noey at close to 10pm but would spring awake at around 2.30am and stay awake till almost 6am. Unfortunately, Noey has a habit of waking around 7am so that seem ... read more
Walking Away, Into the Future
In the midst of all the hustle and bustle of settling our renovation plans and the excitement of seeing our new place come together, I have not had much time to mourn the fact that we will soon be leaving our current home behind. But it is slowly sinking in. It hit me particularly hard sometime last week when I came into the hall and saw Noey staring out of the window at the great greenery view which we have and the gardeners going about their tasks downstairs, and he turned to me and said:"Like ... read more
